Hand Milled Goat Milk Soaps About Us I remember Mom making soap over an open fire in a big cast iron kettle. First she rendered the lard over the fire to separate it as it melted from the cracklings. Then she used a lard press which left the cracklings in the press after the lard was removed. The lard was used to make laundry soap. Mom said the soap was harsh and used it only for Dad's dirty farm clothes. Many years later, I was blessed with my first goats and a problem: What could I do with all that left over milk? At the library I came upon a book about soaps and the rest is history. Mom often had to change the kind of soaps and lotions she bought because I would break out with rashes from them. But there on paper in this book, I read that goat milk soap had been used for centuries for sensitive skin. By using a process called hand milling, I could get even more of that nutritious goat milk squeezed into the soap. I had used tea tree oil to heal my hands after a doctor recommended it for my daughter who had the same skin problems as I had. So I decided to try adding it to my soap. I also added ginger for warmth and lots of aloe and wheat germ as they are loaded with good for you things as well. I made my first batch with lard, water and milk. It was great-not harsh like the old laundry soap and my skin stopped hurting and healed. Any time anyone mentioned their skin was sensitive, I would give them a bar of soap and they came back for more. Now instead of lard I use only the finest grade vegetable shortenings, many special oils and the freshest strained and pasteurized goat milk. No water is added. To your skin, it is like taking a relaxing milk bath every time you use it. It is even mild enough for a baby. The basic soap is very tricky to make and must then be aged for 5 weeks. After that it is grated so it can be re-melted with more milk. I can stop here, or personalize it with other additives. Each bar is then hand smoothed around the edges, and stamped with a cute "goat approved" seal. It is then aged for another 4 or 5 weeks which results in a long lasting bar of soap ready to enjoy.
