About Us
Prairie House Herbs is lovingly operated by two sisters who spent time during their youth with Aunts and Uncles who lived on farms. Spending time in big cities, (Jo mostly in the Denver area; Laura in Texas) we knew for certain that you can take the girl off the farm but you can never get the farming instinct out of the girl. We were able to find a little farm in need of tender loving care which we purchased in March, 2000. We are as close to Colorado and Nebraska as you can get and still be in a town in Kansas.

We keep Guinea fowl and chickens for pest control. Our rabbits provide lots of premium natural fertilizer for our gardens. Our geese are excellent at warning us when strangers come to the yard. We have cats who do a great job of keeping the rodent population under control--no poisons or traps needed there!

Our goat herd was started when a brother of our sister's friend was decreasing the size of his herd and had one special doe who they just couldn't send to the sale barn because they were so attached to her and instead wanted to find a good home for her where she would be properly cared for. Her name is Ginger and she is IN CHARGE of the barnyard. She protects the chickens, teases the dog, chases the cats who cross her territorial boundary, and gives us the most beautiful Cashmere fleece every spring.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
We use no antibiotics, no hormones and no soy. Our animals are treated like part of the family, fed what nature originally intended for them to eat; we do interfere with nature where predators are concerned and protect our creatures from them by providing a safe place to spend the night where the coyotes, foxes, skunks, raccoons and badgers, etc. cannot easily reach them.

About our eggs...Our chickens live as Mother Nature intended: free to roam about finding tasty nuggets as they go. We do help Mother out a bit by having a variety of grains (but never soy), water and shelter readily available for them. Because of their foraging opportunities the yolks in their eggs have a glowing yellow-orange color reminiscent of a fall harvest moon on the horizon. According to independent testing, eggs from hens raised in this manner are higher in healthy nutrients than caged hens’ eggs.

About our herbs...Our herbs are grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. We hand pick all of our herbs, dry them and mix each of our herbal seasoning mixes in small batches. Because of these practices, our products will always taste similar, but will not always be exactly the same. When using spices we are unable to grow in the High Plains due to climate conditions, we purchase only the finest quality spices to include in our mixes.

About our Herb Seasoning and Meat Rubs Order number of packages. Dry marinade or \"rubs\" are rubbed onto the meat before grilling or roasting. No oil or other liquid is required, although the rub coats the meat better if a small amount of oil is applied to the meat first. For a more robust flavor rubs should be applied up to 4 hours prior to cooking. Unlike commercial mixes whose main ingredient is generally salt, our seasonings contain little or no salt and when we add salt we use sea salt. Any of our herb seasonings or meat rubs can be used in vegetables, on pasta, or for herb butters as well. You are only limited in their use by your imagination! For best results, store in a dry, dark, cool location such as a cupboard away from the heat of appliances.

Colors range from white to tan to dark brown and occasionally even blue, green or olive. They will be clean but unwashed so the bloom will still be on the shell. Our hens are fed only locally grown grains (never soy or commercially prepared feed) and are allowed to roam free around the pastures finding tasty tidbits as they roam. Their diet gives the eggs a robust flavor and makes the yolks in the eggs deep yellow to light orange in color .
