About Us Rattlesnake Ridge Ranch, located northwest of Saint Francis, Kansas, is owned & operated by Chris & Heather Leibbrandt, with a lot of help from our seven boys - David, Mike, Ken, Matt, Chris Jr, Adam, and Nate - and a little bit of help from the baby of the family, Traci Anne. A little about us ... Chris was born and raised on a ranch just a few miles south of where we live. His family actually homesteaded here in the late 1800s. I was a city girl who seldom ventured into the country! A year after we were married, Chris and I moved out to our ranch. One year later, we adopted our boys and added lots of ranch hands all at once :) When we moved back to the ranch, I was thrilled to pursue a more natural lifestyle - raising our own food as naturally as possible. We've been able to add chickens, a few milk cows, and a huge garden with plenty of fruit bushes and plants in addition to our cattle and pigs. (Not to mention plenty of cats! Our ranch is always bustling with energy!) Our boys came out here addicted to junk food. Fortunately, after tasting 'real' food, they have been happy to change! It has been such a blessing to see how they have thrived on a wholesome, natural diet. The health benefits have been tremendous. After seeing the health benefits for ourselves, we were convinced we wanted to pass this on to others, as well. We offer a full range of premium pork products, and are beginning to offer a wide range of grass fed, home raised beef. Our beef cows are "grass ONLY", which means they are never fed a diet of corn or soy. Grass feeding our cattle allows us to offer you beef high in Omega 3, vitamin B12, and many other important nutrients not found in corn raised beef. In addition to these benefits, our animals are never fed animal by-products. Fresh eggs from our Araucanas and other chickens are also available, and the boys hope to have plenty of produce to sell this summer. So ... from our family to yours ... happy eating! Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients We've chosen our ingredients with care; our meat products are completely MSG free, preferring instead to use natural herbs and spices to accent our products. We work hard to keep any unnecessary additives out of our products - our meat can stand on its own without flavor enhancement! Our cured products do contain a small amount of sodium phosphate, erythorbate, and nitrite. These additives are very necessary to the curing process, and our processor uses much less than 200 parts per million of these ingredients. We feel that these very minimal amounts allow us to offer you a safe, nutritious and absolutely delicious product. Our soaps are made from all natural, preservative free lard, raw (hand milked!) jersey milk & cream, sodium hydroxide (lye), and other high quality oils, butters, and healthy goodies for your skin. We use only Phthalate free scents and FDA recommended colors. Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) We firmly believe that a fresh, high quality product is important. To provide such a product, we start by selecting our animals with care. Good genetics has replaced any need for growth hormones or steroids, and allows us to provide you with a healthy, safe product. Secondly, we raise our animals the old fashioned way. For us, that means plenty of fresh air, sunshine, open space, and good, high quality food with recognizable ingredients. Third, we've made it a priority to work in sync with nature. For our cattle, this means we've worked hard to preserve our natural resources by calving in sync with nature as well as practicing good grass management. Both of these allow us to keep our animals healthy and as stress free as possible, as well as minimizing the need for harvested forage and eliminating the need for grain consumption. Our cattle graze in large pastures; they are confined only in extreme weather conditions that could prove hazardous and unsafe. For our pigs, working with nature means that we give them plenty of outdoor space and farrow during the spring and fall to reduce heat and cold stress. Our windbreaks and buildings are also designed to provide the best protection possible from inclement weather, while still allowing them to remain outside as much as they wish. We feel that taking the time to make our animals as comfortable as possible provides a better product. Next, we've chosen to provide high quality meat that comes from animals born and raised on our ranch. We like knowing where our food comes from, and think you deserve to know too. Finally, all of our meat is processed at USDA inspected facilities. It's just one additional step we can take to guarantee you the safest, healthiest product possible. We strive to keep our meat preservative & additive free, and work hard to present you with a product that is healthy & delicious. One final note. While we do work hard to keep our animals healthy, sometimes one gets sick. If an animal does get sick, we do provide antibiotics. I hate seeing an animal suffer. However, we will not process meat from any animal that we have had to treat with antibiotics. Any animal that has been treated with antibiotics is sold at the sale barn for commercial use. Thats a guarantee! Additional Information Our grass finished beef is raised right here on the ranch, without antibiotics, growth hormones, steroids, or anything crazy like that. We feed only grass, never corn or other grains, growing cattle like God intended! We feel strongly that cud chewing animals such as cows were designed to eat grass; they are healthiest when on a grass diet, and healthy animals make healthy meat! Studies have shown that meat from animals raised in feedlots often contain more total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and calories than grass fed beef, while grass fed beef contains higher levels of vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids. Grass fed beef as a distinctive, "Old Time" taste. It varies slightly from animal to animal, depending on what grass they chose. It's a much more full bodied flavor, reminescent of venison or elk. We also age our beef for 21 days, which enhances the flavor and tenderness. While we love the taste of our beef, for some it is an aquired taste based on the healthiness of the product. The taste isn't the only distinctive thing about grass fed beef, however - it requires a much different cooking style than corn fed beef. Typically, grass fed beef is at it's best when cooked about 1/2 the length of time you'd cook a conventionally raised cut of meat. Due to the leanness of the meat, overcooking it can leave you with a dry, rubbery product. While our grass feed beef is definitely a distinctive product, we feel that it's a healthy, delicious choice! |
